Thomas the Tank Engine is a character developed by Rev. W. V. Audrey, an English clergyman who loved trains. He and his son, Christopher Awdry, enjoyed walking around a local train yard visiting with the train men. When Christopher fell ill in 1943, his father told him the first stories about these trains, which Rev. Audrey later published in a series of popular children's books. The books were adapted into an animated television series which was also very popular. The television series featured model trains with some stop motion animation. A wide variety of merchandising followed. In 2005, LEGO began producing licensed sets featuring Thomas and other characters from the series. As a subtheme of the DUPLO line the engines and rolling stock are compatible with other DUPLO Trains and Intellitrains, but they are not motorized.
