Intermodal

Intermodal is a transport term for standardized containers that can be shipped via sea, rail, or road, in the latter two cases typically being fitted onto a carrier frame of some sort (stake trailer, (that is, a trailer that is a frame and wheels only, designed to take containers and nothing else, not to be confused with a flat trailer that has stakes), or container car, respectively) that can mate with any container of the appropriate size.

The terms piggyback, COFC and TOFC are sometimes used to describe intermodal rail transport.

LEGO established a standard size of 4-wide container with set 1525 in 1985 (though regular production sets like 7823 were not available until 1986) that could be carried on 4-wide trucks, 6-wide trains, or in the container ships available in the Nautica line. Unlike most other design standards set by LEGO, this one has endured. The containers in set 10170 are compatible with earlier sets, though they have no doors and therefore cannot carry cargo.
