An Idea Book is a book with building ideas in it. LEGO has published a number of these over the years, usually focusing on current theme product ranges. The models depicted are meant to spur creativity. Some Idea Books are now quite rare and highly prized by collectors. The 7777 Trains idea book, at left, from 1981, during the height of the 12v era, is one such example.

Modern Idea Books typically carry a set number to fit into the LEGO numbering system. Lego has not released a new idea book since 1997 (697, at left, not very well regarded by fans as it is considered quite juniorized) and it is a common request of Adult LEGO Enthusiasts (ALEs) that they do so. With the growth of the internet and in particular, with initiatives like LEGO Factory, it may no longer be as necessary to have idea books as long as people are willing to look online for ideas.
